News: Academia seeks for synergy with IT professionals



The president Academy in information technology, Professor A  Obiniyi said there is an urgent need to create synergy between the academia and the Information technology industry in Nigeria.

He is also calling on regulatory bodies such as NUC, NCCE, NBTE, and NITDA, to synergize with the relevant information technology industry so as to reposition the economy of the country.He made the disclosure at the public presentation of Nigeria IT skills gaps survey in Abuja.

According to him, the best way to curb the problem of unemployment in the country is to provide necessary IT skills for the youth, and will also boost the growth of the economy.

In the same vein, he said in order to develop the local content in ICT development, continuing education programme must be put in place to develop the capacity of the working professionals in the sector.

“It is imperative for the academia and the professionals in the IT industry to leverage on providing an effective method for skills development in the country.

“You will notice that there is a gap between the practicability of the students and the employability skills, we want to maintain a synergy between the training in tertiary institutions and what the employers need in the market “

“Sometimes the student is not well exposed, and in some instance, they do not prepare themselves as well for the challenges that are outside the school environment “

According to him, the Nigerian student is very hardworking, but need a conducive environment to operate optimally.

“We know that for an individual to be an IT expert, there must be a regular supply of electricity.The  data must be effective, and necessary manpower  and infrastructure must be put in place “

He also advised the youth to be very resilient and determined to acquaint themselves with the necessary IT skills to Develop the country.

“The youth should be able to use what they have, to get what they want.They should not give room for any excuse.

While speaking Professor Tanku said there is need to review the curriculum, as the education sector has a curriculum that is outdated and doesn’t meet the need of the moment.

“We need to remind the academia and the professionals in the IT sector to improve the level of proficiency in the field.

We have to constantly maintain high vapour so as to provide new innovations and be able to meet up with world best practices “

He further called on the top players in the information technology industry in Nigeria, to fund research being undergone by students and academia so as to obtain meaningful Result in the country.

Mr Abu Andrew, the president and founder of young innovators Nigeria, said based on the result of the survey, there is 93% obtained in skills gap in the country.

According to him, there is a huge gap between the people in the rural area and the urban area, bringing about a disconnect in the society.

“Most young people in the rural area do not have access to Internet and ICT facilities and make them not to be conversant with recent development in the world “

“We need to broaden IT penetration, and we should begin to use ICT to support every sector of the economy from business, to agriculture, and education”

In his words, he said  the group decided to do a comprehensive research by finding 

solutions to ICT gaps, create IT skills, as well as reduce the burden of unemployment.

“We have majored in the area of capacity development for startups, and have empowered them to utilize the IT skills irrespective of the environment.

We believe that IT is changing the way the world is tilting, in every sector of the economy.

He also charged all Nigerians to be strong developers of technology, and not just use their phone to chat for unnecessary hours, but rather develop innovative apps and software.
